Hi, there! My name is Sarah Streitmatter.

I received my BA from Wake Forest University, and hold an MA in Counseling Psychology and an M.Ed. in School Counseling, with an advanced certificate in College Advising from Columbia University. I am currently pursuing my PhD at Georgia State University. I really do love school—no surprise there!

Working with teens and building relationships that matter is the best part of what I do. Every student has a story, and I believe every single one deserves to be heard.

When I’m not at school, you’ll probably find me walking my dog, Palmer, or exploring new restaurants and trails around Atlanta with my husband, Colson. Honestly, I think I have the best job in the world!

What Does a Session Look Like With Me?

As a former high school counselor, I encountered my fair-share of anxiety-filled, doubt-swirling questions of, “Who am I? What do I value? Who do THEY think I am?” I truly believe within these questions is where the beautiful magic called change happens for our students. In my work as a therapist, I aim for my students to feel empowered and confident as the author of their own story. My sessions focus on getting to the heart of who the student sitting across from me truly is — what they value, dream about, and are navigating day to day. Whether we’re chatting while drawing or taking a walk-and-talk session, I approach each student with humility, curiosity, celebration, and sensitivity.

Championing who a student was, is, and is becoming is central to my work. My guiding belief is simple: every student has a story — a story worth being heard.

My hope is that every tween, teen, and young adult I work with experiences our time together as a safe, yet challenging space where they can feel empowered, confident, and most importantly, fully themselves. I also believe that meaningful change happens within the context of family — I love partnering with parents and caregivers through resources, guidance, and support as they walk alongside their student’s growth.

Favorite Modalities & Therapeutic Interventions

As a Narrative theorist, I believe we as people (and especially our tweens, teens, & young adults) are inherently storytellers. We develop stories about ourselves that serve as a template; one that organizes past experience, influences future behavior, and makes meaning of our lives. Our stories are populated with settings, themes, and characters who are chosen to perform certain roles in our constructed stories. These stories are built over time as we attempt to connect events in our lives and experiences we have, and from there, make meaning of those moments. Identifying the dominant stories we tell ourselves, and where they might be problem-saturated, is the first step in re-authoring the story we want to write.
