Hey, I'm James.

I have been supporting students’ growth and development in various capacities for almost 10 years. Prior to joining the team at Early Connections, I served as a middle school School Counselor in the Sandy Springs area. In this role, I provided individual and group counseling to support students’ social/emotional growth and academic success and achievement. I also collaborated closely with school staff to provide consultative services aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of the students in our building.

I firmly believe in a collaborative approach to counseling and therapy, and make it a priority to involve parents and caregivers in the process. My goal is to create a support system that extends beyond the therapy space, ensuring families play an active role in their child/teen’s progress and success.

In addition to my counseling experience, I had the opportunity to serve as a 504 coordinator for several years. I enjoy helping students and their families navigate their educational journey, providing the guidance and resources they need to ensure their child/teen is set up for long-term success.

I received my Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Professional Counseling and my Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in School Counseling from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!). As an Associate Professional Counselor (APC), I am working under the supervision of Dr. Cindy Murphy, LPC, NCC, CPCS.

Outside of sessions, I love to spend time with my one year old golden retriever, who has the MOST energy ever. Before I became a counselor/therapist, I got my undergraduate degree in vocal performance!

What Does a Session Look Like With Me?

A session can look however my clients want it to look! Sometimes we play games (Battleship, Uno, Speed, maybe even poker); sometimes we’re in the game room and getting active (ping-pong, soccer, basketball); sometimes we sit and talk.

Whatever you need out of your hour each week is there for you!

Favorite Modalities & Therapeutic Interventions

In my work as a counselor, I draw upon Relational-Cultural Therapy (RCT), which emphasizes the importance of building authentic, growth-fostering relationships. At its core, RCT recognizes that human connections are key to emotional well-being, and the quality of our relationships can shape how we navigate challenges in life.

For tweens and teens, relationships—whether with family, friends, or others—are often central to their identity and emotional development. RCT focuses on the healing power of relationships, helping clients understand how they connect with others and fostering resilience through mutual empathy and understanding.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship we build can be the most important part of the counseling process. It provides a safe, supportive space where clients can feel seen, heard, and valued. In my practice, I aim to cultivate an environment where my clients feel empowered to express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences without fear of judgment. Together, we explore how their relationships with others impact their sense of self, and we work toward creating healthier, more meaningful connections in their lives. For kids and adolescents, who often find themselves navigating complex social dynamics, this approach helps them gain insight into their relational patterns, develop self-compassion, and build stronger, more fulfilling relationships with those around them.
